Every day phrases from the Bible |
|
|
As I have studied my Bible I have come across many English phrases that are used in our every day culture. I suspect
that most people who use them don't realize that they come from the Bible. In some cases these phrases have taken
on a meaning that goes beyond the original intent. I also wonder how these phrases entered into our lexicon - probably
through some sermons that were preached from these texts years ago?
As an exercise you might want to read through the verses below and see if your understanding of the phrase agrees with the Bible text from which it was originally taken. The everyday phrase will be set off in the text Like this. If you can think of additional every day phrases, please send them to biblequestion@tabernacle-baptist.com. Many of these phrases are found in the King James Version (also called the Authorized Version or AV) but some are found in other English translations (see notes below).
